Attempted Sale of Wrigley Field to State of Illinois Looking Like Lost Cause
3/18/2008
CHICAGO – The Illinois Sports Facilities Authority is expected to submit its proposal for the purchase of Wrigley Field, but according to Chicago Tribune sources on Tuesday, the deal is close to dying. The state agency, which is chaired by former Illinois Gov. James Thompson, currently owns and operates U.S. Cellular Field.
The government authority has some high-powered opposition for the Wrigley deal.
Mayor Richard Daley in Chicago doesn’t want to see his newly approved 10.25 percent sales tax hike supplement the ballpark. Reeling from budget problems, lawmakers in the state also don’t want to see the purchase as a favorable use of monetary funding to a private government entity.
